The October Performers
The theme for the night was spooky magic.
Ken King lead off the night. He started with his creepy jokes (Clinton and Schwarzenegger). Bob Dippel and James Ridner both selected balloons from a clear plastic bag. Ken then showed a jar with creepy crawlies. Out of this, a spider was selected by Scott Freda. Ken put the selections in a pan. After connecting some electrodes he opened the pan: the red and blue balloons were now inflated, and the spider had turned into a LIVE TARANTULA. Yow!
Michael Holt showed a mirror frame. He explained how he had a premonition that his mirror is possessed and would be able to help him in the show. Michael had Ramona Heimlich select a card from among many with different drawings. (She picked a butterfly). Michael looked into the mirror and determined Ramona had chosen a butterfly. Vineet Vijaykumar came up and looked into the mirror as Ramona selected a different card (a flower). Vineet determined that Ramona had selected a flower because that is what he saw in the mirror!
Patrick Reed showed four coins and explained he would do coins through the table. He then brought out a small table! He placed four coins in his hand and smacking his hand on the little table, one coin visibly fell through. He repeated this with a second and a third coin. Finally, he attempted to pass all four coins thru the table after first covering it with a table cloth. He was unsuccessful, but on his second attempt it was not the coins that passed thru the small table, but the small table that passed through the LARGE table. This routine won Patrick the performance award for the evening. The randomly drawn secret category was Best Adaptation of a Classic Congratulations, Patrick!
Stefan Fisher noted how he has been practicing raising the dead. His medium was a young woman, Clara from Borrelly Rectory a very haunted place in England. The rectory, due to the hauntings was abandoned. It eventually burned down and Claras charred body was found inside, clutching a key a key that she apparently tried to use to open the door, but could not. Stefan showed the charred key. Invoking Claras name, the key slowly turned in his hand.
Next Stefan did his tombstone routine. In his dream he sees all blank tombstones. Then he finds his name on one, but fortunately no date of death. His recurring dream now a nightmare finds that the tombstone now also bears his date of death. Too bad, as we like him! Stefan later went on to give a mini-lecture on scripting and story telling.
Bob Dippel performed the Hula Hoop illusion. Hula hoops linked one, then two, three then four. They formed such shapes as a pretzel, a ball, a flower opening and a long chain. Then they became unlinked.
Scott Emo was next. He explained how he learned some of his magic from a ghost. He started by asking for a pencil and a dollar bill. Carl Ferreira inspected the bill. Scott gave post-it notes to Ramona who wrote ghost on it. Scott put this on the bill and pushed the pencil through it. Ghost was penetrated, but the bill was fine. Scott next attempted an illusion. He had Will Chandler stand up. Raising a screen in front of Will, he grabbed each side of the partition - one on either side of Will, from behind him. Will's hands were clearly seen the entire time - as were Scott's. But Scott, apparently a ghostly apparition himself, was able to pass completely through Will's body because when the screen was lowered, Scott was now standing in FRONT of Will.
Carl Ferreira, a first time visitor introduced his effect In the Twilight Zone. Vineet volunteered to assist. Vineet was seated while Carl did paper balls over the head. The napkins vanished from Vineets perspective and kept reappearing in Carl's pocket.
Vineet Vijaykumar performed next. He asked for a volunteer Patrick Reed assisted by selecting a card (4S) and shuffling it back into the deck. The trick was actually to be done by the two one-eyed jacks. Vineet placed these at the top and bottom of the deck an explained that the Jacks had now got Patricks card between them. He went a step farther, however, and showed that indeed, the jacks had bracketed a single card the selection.
Steven Christenson told of his brother, Eric, who has departed the mortal realm in a tragic accident. Though not a religious man, Eric did note a biblical reference to a man in hell who could see up into heaven - implying that the dead can see the dead. Steven wondered whether his brother could help him to test this theory and asked 4 spectators to write the name of a living person on slips of paper while a fifth person, Carl Feirrera, was to write the name of a DEAD person on his paper. The spectators wrote the names, placed them in envelopes which they mixed. The watch Eric had at the time of his death was suspended by a length of cord and held over each envelope. When over four of the envelopes nothing happened; however, over one envelope the watch began gyrating. This envelope was found to contain the name of the one departed individual: Harry Houdini.
John Bodine had several spectators examine two rubberbands. (He made sure to have one of the judges inspect his dollar bill, too!). He then held the two bands separately stretched between his left and right hands. He pulled the top strand of the bottom band up to the bottom strand of the top band and the bands became linked. He then held the bands plainly and they were indeed linked!
